Reading - 15-20 minutes each night will assist with developing reading skills and extending your vocabulary. This will help improve your writing. It would also be great if for 5 minutes each night you read to an adult.
Mathematics - Using your username and password you can access Studyladder. I have placed several activities there for you to complete. Please focus on trying to complete all set activities, as well as continuing to practise your multiplication. Year 6 (plus some of the year 5's) are focusing on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication, for example 23 x

_____
______
Year 5 is focusing on 2 and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication and using shortcuts to get answers. For example when we multiply by two we double, when we multiply by 4 we double, double; when we multiply by 8 we double, double, double; when we multiply by 5 we multiply by 10 and halve the number. Extra practice at home on these skills would be of great benefit to everyone. Questions like 58 x 2, 22 x 4, 56 x 8, and 43 x5 are some of the questions you could do.
Literacy -
This term we are studying newspapers. As part of this unit we are creating a class newspaper. For your homework we would like you to prepare a short article, with an exciting headline, about something that is happening in your life. You may wish to add a picture. The article only needs to be a couple of paragraphs long.
Year 6 - You have an Author Study that you are working on in class. This Author Study is due Term 3, Week 5. Researching your author and discussing your choice of authors with your parents would benefit your work.
Year 5 -
Both Year 5 and 6 have several tasks and these will continue until the end of term:
1. Studyladder that are focusing on reading a short passage and answering questions about this text.
2. Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Prepare a 4 minute speech on one of the following topics. Asylum seekers, The meaning of Australia Day, Getting a multicultural education, Learning different languages, Religion, Multiculturalism in the media, The same but different, Un-Australian, Stereotypes, Living between cultures.
What are the Adjudicators looking for?
The adjudicators will make their decision based on the manner, matter and method the contestants employ in presenting their speeches. They will expect contestants to be confident and engaging speakers. The prepared speeches need to show an understanding of multiculturalism, and be well developed and interesting. Contestants are also expected to demonstrate a balance of personal opinion and information in their speeches, as well as a balance of humour and sincerity. Finally, adjudicators are required to give equal consideration to the prepared and impromptu speeches in making their decision
Should your child not wish to compete that is okay but a written speech is still required as part of homework. Some students haven't finalised their speeches. For those that do not wish to stand in front of others they have the option of recording their speech on a computer or ipad for assessment.
